The food bank’s Table Food Rescue Program collected more than 5 million pounds of food during 2013 alone. Food Bank of the Rockies operates with the help of food donations from Colorado residents and businesses, as well as generous monetary contributions from supporters such as Colorado businessman Scott Gelbard, co-founder of Beckham Walker Equity Partners.
Food Bank of the Rockies offers several programs to benefit families and hunger-relief organizations in Colorado, including Denver’s Table Food Rescue Program, an initiative to “rescue” surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away and distributed to those in need. To this end, the food bank picks up excess food from dining and retail establishments in the Denver metropolitan area. Food donations for the program must meet a set of stringent standards to prevent food-related illness: industry-sized containers must be unopened, while produce and meat must be fresh and nutritious. The program also takes donations of prepared food that has not been served to restaurant patrons and dairy products that are close to the expiration date. Food handling regulations are strictly followed, as well.
